UPPER ARLINGTON, Ohio — When an American flag reaches the end of its life, it's supposed to be "retired" in a respectful way. A local Boy Scout has created an easy way to do that by turning his love of the Stars and Stripes into a project that will last for generations.
It's just inside the door at the Upper Arlington Municipal Building where Joseph Piccininni is showing off his true colors - red, white, and blue.
"(The flag's) a really an important symbol to me," said Joseph. "I live in this country, and there's lots of freedoms in this country that a lot of other countries don't have that are protected by the amendments and the bill of rights and I just think that's important, and the flag, stands for those."
He's turned that love of the American flag into something that will give him the highest rank achievable in the Boy Scouts.
"Well, my Eagle project is a project that educates the Upper Arlington community about the United States flag," he said.
That project will make it easy for people to retire Old Glory when it becomes too old to fly.
"There's no set way to do a flag retirement ceremony. It just has to be respectful," said Joseph.
He and his scout troop have conducted flag retirement ceremonies at the Hilliard V-F-W post 4931. They burn the flags in a fire pit, and then bury the ashes.
But they can't have a ceremony without the flags. So Joseph began a four month project to write a pamphlet about flag history and etiquette, hold a car wash to raise money, and use the money to create a dropbox where citizens can leave their tattered American flags in Joseph's caring hands.
"We first thought to put it at the (high) school but then we thought it would be a better idea to put it in the municipal building because there's more foot traffic here, obviously."
And from now on, Joseph's flag dropbox is ready to accept American flags - worn, faded, torn or soiled - for proper disposal.
It's an Eagle project with real meaning.
"I'm glad that I could have gotten this one done because it leaves that lasting impression and it educates people in the community about the flag so I'm really happy that it's done and it's leaving a lasting impression too," he said.
The box is accessible any time the Upper Arlington Municipal Building is open. There's no charge to dispose of a flag.
Joseph expects to become an Eagle Scout by the end of the year.
