PICKERINGTON, Ohio (WSYX/WTTE) — Kenzie Carlson started making blankets for seriously ill children when she was just a sophomore in high school.
Now a freshman at Kent State University, the Pickerington teenager has no intention of scaling back.
"I have 20 blankets that I haven't started yet," she told WSYX/WTTE.
Families from around the world have contacted Kenzie with blanket requests. She estimates that she's made more than 100. Each of them costing between $30 and $60 to produce, but she never asks any of the families for payment, she said.
"I was like, 'I need to pay for this by myself,' so I do a lot of babysitting jobs and a lot of times I get donations online."
In June of 2015, Kenzie created a Go Fund Me page to help with the finances.
Occasionally, she meets some of the families who receive blankets. It's often an emotional experience.
"The first child I made a blanket for, she passed away maybe a week later. The superstitious part of me was like, 'Is it my fault?' I just felt horrible. I felt like I didn’t do anything. I think I probably cried for two hours."
Despite the heartache, there are stories of recovery and healing and that's why she continues.
She knows her blankets warm hearts.
"I feel very blessed that I am able to do this."
