COLUMBUS, OH — Autism is now diagnosed in one out of 59 American children. Many of those children will grow up to become independent adults. One way to help them on their journey is a unique partnership that allows some of them to help others, while also helping themselves.
Each Wednesday during the summer, students from Bridgeway Academy arrive at the Mid-Ohio Food Bank ready to volunteer.They stock shelves and learn job skills in the process. Stacking bread seems simple enough. But for teens with autism, it can be a challenge.
Teacher Tammy Brinser says her students don't get a free pass.
"I have very high expectations of our students," she says. I expect them to do anything any other typical teenager can do."
She says it takes patience, practice, and persistence for the students to get it right.
"I don't see any bagels yet," says Brinser while working with a student. "Only English muffins on the top so where else could we put the bagels," she asks.
The academy encourages its students to practice nearly 300 jobs as part of the school's vocational skills program. The hope is that it all leads to real employment one day.
Mid-Ohio Food Bank spokesperson Jill Jess says volunteering there is a great way for the students (and others) to give, and to receive.
"The Mid Ohio Food Bank is all about helping people," she says. "And it's one of those jobs where you kinda get choked up almost every day. But just watching these kids who learning basic skills and working hard to learn those, and knowing that we were part of making that happen, you know, it really makes you feel proud and good about the work."
And when the bread stacking is complete, it's high fives, and a bus ride back to school for the students.
"This looks so good. You guys have come so far in three weeks in this. I am so proud of you," says Brinser as she slaps hands with the students.
Bridgeway pairs its students with a specialist to help find a job that's just right for each one of them. The school emphasizes the importance of giving its students some sense of independence.
